What Are PET Preforms? A Complete Guide for Buyers

If you have ever picked up a bottle of water, a soft drink or a bottle of edible oil, you have held the finished form of a PET preform. The preform is the small, heavy, test-tube-shaped piece that a bottle starts life as — and if you are sourcing packaging, it is almost certainly what you are actually buying, not the finished bottle.

What exactly is a PET preform?

A PET preform is a precisely moulded piece of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with a finished, threaded neck at the top and a thick, closed body below. It looks like a stubby test tube. The neck — including the threads where the cap screws on — is already in its final shape. The body is deliberately thick and short because it has not yet been stretched into a bottle.

Think of the preform as a bottle in concentrated form. All the plastic that will become a 1-litre bottle is already there in a preform that fits in your palm. When it is later heated and blown, that same material stretches out to form the full bottle without adding or removing any plastic.

Why doesn't everyone just make finished bottles?

Finished PET bottles are mostly air. Shipping them is like shipping empty boxes — expensive and inefficient. Preforms solve this elegantly:

• They ship densely. A truck that carries a few thousand finished bottles can carry many times more preforms, because preforms are compact until blown.
• They store easily. Bottlers keep preforms on hand and blow bottles on demand, right before filling, so they are not storing warehouses full of empty bottles.
• They separate the specialists. Preform manufacturing needs precision injection-moulding tooling and food-grade resin handling. Blowing and filling needs different machinery. Splitting the two lets each side specialise.

The anatomy of a preform

Three parts matter when you specify a preform:

1. The neck finish — the threaded top. This is fixed and never changes during blowing, so it must match your cap and your filling line exactly. Common finishes include PCO 1881, PCO 1810 and 28mm 3-Start (Alaska). We cover these in detail in understanding neck finishes.
2. The body — the thick tube that stretches into the bottle wall.
3. The gate — the small point at the very bottom where molten PET entered the mould.

How preforms are specified: the three numbers that matter

When you order preforms, three specifications do most of the work:

1. Neck finish

The diameter and thread style of the neck (e.g. 28mm PCO 1881). It must match your caps and capping heads. Get this wrong and nothing downstream fits.

2. Grammage (weight)

The weight of the preform in grams determines how much material is available to form the bottle. A heavier preform makes a stronger, thicker bottle; a lighter one saves resin but has less material to work with. 3. Blowing capacity

The bottle volume the preform is designed to fill. An 11.6 g Alaska preform is built for a 500 ml bottle; a 17 g one for 1 litre. Matching grammage to the target volume is the heart of good preform selection.

What makes a good preform?

Not all preforms are equal. The things that separate a reliable preform from a troublesome one:

• Food-grade virgin resin. For anything touching food or drink, the PET should be food-grade virgin resin — not blended or reground scrap — so clarity, strength and safety stay consistent.
• Tight weight and dimensional control. Consistent grammage and neck dimensions mean consistent bottles and reliable capping.

• Correct intrinsic viscosity (IV). The resin grade must suit the application — water, carbonated drinks and hot-fill products each place different demands on the material.

When you approach a manufacturer, come with:

• Your bottle volume and, ideally, a drawing or sample.
• Your neck finish (or your cap, so it can be matched).
• Your product type (water, CSD, oil, pharma) — this drives resin and weight.
• Any colour requirement (clear, blue tint, amber, custom).

A good manufacturer will translate that into the right grammage and finish for you rather than just quoting a catalogue number.
