Choosing the Right PET Preform: Neck Finish, Grammage & Material
A practical buyer's guide to selecting PET preforms — how neck finish, grammage and resin choice affect your bottles, cost and line performance.

Picking a PET preform looks simple until you are staring at a spec sheet full of neck finishes, grammages and blowing capacities. Get it right and your bottles blow cleanly, seal reliably and cost less per unit. Get it wrong and you are fighting leaks, wall-thickness issues and wasted resin.
This guide walks through the three decisions that matter most when you source preforms — and how we think about them at ASTR PET Industries.
1. Start with the neck finish
The neck finish is the threaded top of the preform. It never changes during blowing, so it must match your cap and your filling line exactly. The common finishes we manufacture include:
- PCO 1881 — the modern lightweight standard for carbonated soft drinks and water. Shorter neck, less resin, lower cost.
- PCO 1810 — the older long-neck CSD standard, still widely used.
- 28mm 3-Start (Alaska) — a popular finish for packaged drinking water.
- 46mm — wide-mouth finishes for jars and bulk containers.
Rule of thumb: choose the finish your cap supplier and capping heads already support. Changing a neck finish means changing tooling downstream, not just the preform.
2. Match grammage to bottle size and use
Grammage (the preform weight in grams) determines how much material is available to form the bottle. Too light and the walls come out thin and unstable; too heavy and you are paying for resin you do not need.
| Bottle use | Typical volume | Common grammage |
|---|---|---|
| Packaged water | 500 ml – 1 L | 9 – 16 g |
| Carbonated soft drink | 500 ml – 2 L | 22 – 45 g |
| Edible oil | 500 ml – 1 L | 18 – 30 g |
| Pharma / phenyl | 100 – 500 ml | 12 – 25 g |
These are starting points, not rules — the right grammage depends on your fill, pressure, drop-test targets and shelf life. Our team routinely helps customers dial this in against their actual blowing setup.
3. Insist on food-grade virgin resin
For anything that touches food or beverages, the resin matters as much as the geometry. We use food-grade virgin PET only — never blended, never reground — so clarity, strength and safety stay consistent batch to batch. If your product is water, a soft drink, oil or pharma, this is non-negotiable.
A quick sourcing checklist
Before you place an order, confirm:
- Neck finish matches your caps and capping line.
- Grammage is validated against your bottle volume and drop-test.
- Resin is food-grade virgin PET with batch-level QC.
- Colour/tint (clear, blue, amber) is matched to your brand.
- Lead time and dispatch fit your production schedule.
Talk to a manufacturer, not just a catalogue
The fastest way to avoid a costly mistake is to share your bottle drawing, fill type and target weight with your preform maker early. See our full PET preform range, or if you are sourcing locally, our Indore preform page covers same-day dispatch across Central India.
